sapele-bowl-blanks-kiln-dried-turning-blank
Sapele Bowl Blanks - Kiln Dried Ribbon Stripe Turning Blanks

Sapele (Entandrophragma cylindricum), sometimes sold as Sapelli or Sapeli Mahogany, is a West African hardwood prized by turners for its depth of color and its figure. Interlocked grain gives quartered surfaces a ribbon-stripe look that shifts with the light, and the reddish-brown heartwood polishes to a rich, glossy shine. These kiln-dried bowl blanks from California Exotic Hardwoods are ready to mount on the lathe for bowls, platters, hollow forms and decorative vessels.

Specifications

Wood Name: Sapele, Sapelli, Sapeli Mahogany

Botanical Name: Entandrophragma cylindricum

Available Sizes: 4" x 4" x 2", 5" x 5" x 2", 6" x 6" x 2", 7" x 7" x 2", 8" x 8" x 2", 9" x 9" x 2", 10" x 10" x 2"

Drying: Kiln dried

Moisture Content: 6-7%

Features

Medium to dark reddish-brown heartwood with a natural chatoyant sheen

Interlocked grain that shows ribbon-stripe figure on quartered faces

Medium-to-high density, durable and dimensionally stable once dry

Polishes to a deep luster, often compared to fine mahogany with bolder figure

Turning and Finishing

Turning: Cuts cleanly with sharp tools; interlocked grain can tear out, so take light final cuts

Sanding: Sands smoothly and the figure comes up quickly

Finishing: Oils and clear coats bring out the ribbon stripes

Best for: Bowls, platters, hollow forms, boxes and decorative pieces

Good to Know

Grain pattern and color vary from piece to piece, so every blank is unique.

Dimensions are approximate; measure your blank before planning a project.

You will receive a blank similar to the photos shown.
