A Woodworker's Guide to Exotic Hardwoods: Species, Uses & How to Choose

Published: June 2026 | Category: Woodworking, Wood Species Guides | Read time: 8 min

Domestic lumber is predictable and familiar — but exotic hardwoods open up a world of colour, figure, density, and character that no local species can match. Whether you're turning pen blanks, building a cutting board, crafting knife handles, or making furniture, the right exotic hardwood transforms a good project into a memorable one.

This guide introduces the most popular exotic hardwood species we carry at California Exotic Hardwoods, what makes each one special, and which projects they're best suited for.

What Makes a Wood "Exotic"?

The term simply refers to species sourced outside the domestic region — typically tropical or subtropical hardwoods from Africa, Central and South America, Southeast Asia, and Hawaii. Exotic species are generally:

Harder and denser than most domestic woods
More visually striking — unusual grain patterns, vivid colours, and natural figure
More dimensionally stable when properly kiln dried
- Naturally resistant to moisture, insects, and decay in many cases

They do require more care in working — sharp tools, attention to grain direction, and (for some oily species) surface preparation before finishing.

Top Exotic Hardwoods for Woodworkers

Wenge (Millettia laurentii)
A dark, almost black African hardwood with dramatic pale streaks running through the grain. Wenge is dense and stiff, with a coarse, open grain that gives a naturally textured surface. It's visually bold and unmistakable.

Janka Hardness: 1,630 lbf

Best for:Furniture, cutting boards, flooring, turning blanks, pen blanks, knife handles. Excellent contrast wood in multi-species projects.

Working notes: Wenge's coarse grain can splinter along edges — use sharp tools and back up cuts where possible. It finishes beautifully with oil finishes.

Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii)
Few woods stop people in their tracks the way fresh Padauk does. Its vivid orange-red heartwood is one of the brightest colours in the lumber world. Over time and with UV exposure, it mellows to a rich reddish-brown — still beautiful, but different from fresh stock.

Janka Hardness: 1,725 lbf

Best for: Cutting boards (for colour contrast), turning blanks, jewellery boxes, furniture accents, pen blanks.

Working notes: Works easily with both hand and machine tools. Glues and finishes well. The fine red dust is a mild sensitiser — use dust protection.

Purpleheart (Peltogyne spp.)
When first cut, Purpleheart is a dull greyish-brown — then the magic happens. Exposure to air and light triggers a chemical reaction that turns the wood a vivid, deep purple. This colour fades to a brown-purple with prolonged UV exposure but can be preserved with a UV-blocking finish.

Janka Hardness: 2,520 lbf

Best for: Cutting boards, furniture accents, turning blanks, tool handles, inlays.

Working notes: Very hard — keep tools sharp. It can be gummy when cutting, so let tools run free rather than forcing them.

Zebrawood (Microberlinia brazzavillensis)
The name says it all. Zebrawood's striking pale yellow base with dark brown-to-black streaks creates one of the most distinctive grain patterns in the exotic hardwood world. Quartersawn material shows the most dramatic figure.

Janka Hardness: 1,575 lbf

Best for: Furniture, decorative panels, cutting boards, turning blanks, pen blanks, architectural millwork.

Working notes: The interlocked grain can tear if not planed correctly — always work with the grain. Sharp blades and a light touch give the best results.

Bocote (Cordia spp.)
A Mexican hardwood that combines a rich golden-brown base with dramatic dark brown swirling grain lines, often creating landscape-like patterns in flat-sawn material. Bocote is moderately hard, relatively easy to work, and produces a beautiful natural lustre.

Janka Hardness: 2,010 lbf

Best for: Furniture, turned objects, pen blanks, knife handles, musical instrument parts.

Working notes:Works well with sharp tools. Its natural oils mean light sanding of glue surfaces before bonding gives better adhesion.

Ovangkol / Shedua (Guibourtia ehie)
Often compared to rosewood in both appearance and tone, Ovangkol features a yellow-brown to grey-brown base with interlocked dark streaks. Curly and figured Ovangkol is particularly sought after by woodworkers and luthiers alike.

Janka Hardness: 1,490 lbf

Best for: Furniture, cabinetry, guitar backs and sides, turning blanks, cutting boards.

Working notes: Machines cleanly. Responds well to most finishes. An excellent rosewood alternative without CITES concerns.

Black Palm (Hyphaene petersiana)
One of the most unusual woods available. Black Palm is technically a monocot, not a true hardwood — its structure is made up of dense dark fibres embedded in a lighter matrix, creating a dramatic speckled appearance. No two pieces look alike.

Janka Hardness: 2,020 lbf

Best for:Pen blanks, knife handles, turning projects, jewellery, small decorative items.

Working notes:Does not have traditional grain — it can't be split like regular wood. Sharp tools are essential. Finish with oil or CA glue for the best results.

Pau Rosa (Bobgunnia madagascariensis)
A stunning pink-to-rose-red hardwood from Africa with fine, even grain and a natural lustre. Pau Rosa is increasingly popular as a beautiful, legal alternative to Brazilian Rosewood in both woodworking and lutherie.

Janka Hardness: 3,170 lbf

Best for: Knife handles, cutting boards, pen blanks, turned objects, fingerboards.

Working notes: Extremely hard — will dull tools faster than softer species. Reward patience; the finished surface is outstanding.

Tips for Buying Exotic Hardwood

Buy kiln dried.Green or air-dried exotic lumber can continue moving for years after purchase. Properly kiln-dried stock is dimensionally stable and ready to work.

Check the moisture content. For interior woodworking projects, aim for 6–8% MC. We kiln dry all our stock before it ships.

Order a sample or small quantity first. Each species has unique working properties. If you've never worked with a particular exotic, ordering a pen blank or small turning blank before committing to a full board is a smart investment.

Factor in waste. Exotic hardwoods often have natural character — live edges, colour variation, occasional checks near the ends. Budget for 10–15% additional material beyond your net requirements.
