Bass wood or Tilia americana (Scientific name ) is a tree species native to eastern North America, ranging from southeast Manitoba to New Brunswick, southwest to northeast Oklahoma, southeast to South Carolina, and west along the Niobrara River to Cherry County, Nebraska.

Other common names of Bass wood are  lime, linden, American basswood.

Light weight Basswood is an excellent choice for many woodcarvers. this beautiful is soft, fine, even texture makes it easy to work with, and its pale, inconspicuous color  does not detract from the finished product’s carved patterns, easy to paint and color.

Despite its high initial shrinkage, basswood is stable in service after drying. And, despite being both lightweight and soft, the wood has an excellent MOE-to-weight ratio. However, its MOR is comparable to its light weight; simply put, when stressed, the wood will remain stiff but will still break (rupture) at a relatively average weight.

The wood is thought to be odourless. This makes it valuable in the production of woodenware, low-cost furniture, and carriage bodies; the inner bark is tough and fibrous, and was previously used to make ropes.
