Granadillo (Platymiscium yucatanum) — also known as Mexican Rosewood — is a
premium tropical hardwood prized by luthiers, furniture makers, and woodturners
worldwide. This hand-selected piece features rich reddish-brown heartwood with
striking purple undertones and tight, straight grain ideal for instrument building.
Scientific Name: Platymiscium yucatanum
Dimensions: 52" L × 11" W × 1.25" T
Grade: Finest quality | Highly figured | Kiln dried
TONEWOOD QUALITIES:
Granadillo delivers a broad tonal frequency range with clear articulation and
bell-like sustain — sonically comparable to Indian Rosewood but denser and
harder. Pairs beautifully with Sitka Spruce tops for clear, ringing,
long-sustaining notes. Used by classical guitar makers for over 50 years.
WORKABILITY:
Despite its hardness (Janka ~2,200 lbf), Granadillo machines and turns cleanly
with sharp tools. Takes oil, lacquer, shellac, and CA finishes to a high natural
gloss with minimal effort. Produces a pleasant caramel-like aroma when worked.
IDEAL FOR:
Guitar backs & sides | Fingerboards | Neck blanks | Furniture | Knife handles |
Turning blanks | Decorative woodworking
